I am grateful for the opportunity to deliver my speech here after 7-days’ preparation with my friend Jinly. Thanks to Jinly’s strong support in our work. I think it is my way of saying thank you to you that giving an excellent presentation to all my friends here.

The subject of our presentation is “YOUR DREAM & YOUR GOAL”. During the next 10 minutes, we’ll give you a brief explanation of these stuff at the best of our knowledge.

First of all, I’d like to spent 3 or 5 minutes on discussing about the dream. When we were 5, they asked us what we want to be when we grow up. We answered like superman, princess, or in my case, a sailor moon. When we were 10, again they asked and the answer was policemen, doctors and some other high-principled jobs. But unfortunately, we finally found our dreams unrealistic as we entered a not-so-good high school, did not-so-good school works and went to a not-so-good direction in our life. I guess, many of you have thought about changing your dreams, but finally felt at a loss again. Yep! We’re adults and they are waiting for a serious answer. Well, how about this? WHO THE HELL KNOWS! Dream is only a dream. It’s unnecessary for us to think over our dreams all day long. You know, dreams always change, and this is not the time to make difficult decisions. But what do dreams do? Why do we still have an urgent need of dreams?

Think about it: do you have had a time when you were full of happiness just because you have made an achievement that pushes you a bit to your dream? Do you have had a time when you insist on what you were doing even the tears keep falling from your eyes? That is the power from dreams! May I equate the faith and the dream here? As we all know, aims and dreams are far from each other to some extent but close to each other on the other hand. Just like the parabola and the number line in mathematics. But it is the dream that help us to map out our aim and work out plans one after another in our life. Just like what Howard Schultz, the founder of the Starbuck said, Dreams are like the stars----we never reach them, but like mariners, we chart our course by them. And I believe that if you have a dream and make efforts step by step, some of you may extremely finish the quantitative change on the way to success and reach the qualitative change!

I would like to finish my part by a tongue twister: Whether the weather be fine or whether the weather be not. Whether the weather be cold or whether the weather be hot. We'll weather the weather whether we like it or not. Whatever you dreams are and however difficult it is to realize them. Reach your aim step by step and I believe your dreams will extremely come into truth!

in a sense we've come to our nation's capital to cash a check. when the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the constitution and the declaration of independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every american was to fall heir. this note was a promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the "unalienable rights" of "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." it is obvious today that america has defaulted on this promissory note, insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. instead of honoring this sacred obligation, america has given the negro people a bad check, a check which has come back marked "insufficient funds."

Good morning, it's my honor to stand here and give you this speech about dreams. There I want to start my speech with two short stories.

The first story happened when I was in primary school, I wrote in my composition that my dream was to be a teacher when I grew up. Meanwhile, what my classmates wrote about their dreams was that he or she wanted to be a doctor, a scientist or an astronaut.

The second story happened at my first year in university. i'm studying in a city that's famous for its walls. people who visit mycity are amazed at the imposing sight of its walls, eecially when silhouettedagainst the setting sun with gold, shining streaks. the old, cracked bricks arecovered with lichens and the walls are weather-beaten guards standing still forcenturies.

our ancestors liked to build walls. they built walls in beijing, xi'an,nanjing and many other cities, and they built the great wall, which snakesacross half our country. they built walls to protect against enemies and evilirits. this tradition has survived to this day: we still have many parks andschools walled off from the public.

for a long time, walls were one of the most natural things in the world tome.

my perceptions, however, changed after i made a hiking trip to the easternsuburbs of my city. my classmates and i were walking with some foreign students.as we walked out of the city, we found ourselves flanked by tall trees, whichformed a wide canopy above our heads. suddenly one foreign student asked me,"where is the entrance to the eastern suburbs?"

"we're already in the eastern suburbs," i replied. he seemed taken aback,"i thought you chinese had walls for everything." his remark set off a heateddebate. at one point, he likened our walled cities to "jails", while i insistedthat the eastern suburbs were one of the many places in china that had nowalls.that debate had no winners, but i did learn a lot from this student. forinstance, he told me that some major universities like oxford and cambridge werenot surrounded by walls. i have to admit that we do have many walls in china,and as we develop our country, we must look carefully at them and decide whetherthey are physical or intangible. we will keep some walls but tear down thosethat impede our development.

let me give another example.

a year ago, when i was working on a term paper, i needed a book on businesslaw and found a copy in the law school library. however, the librarian coldlyrejected my request to borrow it, saying, "you can't borrow this book, you'renot a student here." in the end, i had to end 200 yuan to buy a copy. meanwhile,the copy in the law school gathered dust on the shelf.

at the beginning of this semester, i heard that my university had startedto think of unifying its libraries and linking them to libraries at otheruniversities, so my experience wouldn't be repeated. barriers would be replacedby bridges. an inter-library loan system would give us access to books from anylibrary. with globalization and china integrated into the world, i believe manyof these intangible walls will be knocked down.

i know that globalization is a controversial issue, and it is hard to saywhether it is good or bad. but one thing is for sure: it draws our attention tochina's tangible and intangible walls and forces us to examine their role in themodern world.

and how about the ancient walls of mine and other cities?should we tearthem down?definitely not. my city, like beijing and other cities, is actuallymaking a great effort to preserve the walls. these walls attract historians,archaeologists, and many schoolchildren who are trying to study our history andcultural heritage. walls have become bridges to our past and to the rest of theworld. if the ancient builders of these walls were still alive today, they wouldbe proud to see such great changes in the role of their walls. they are nowbridges that link east and west, south and north, and all countries of theworld. our cultural heritage will survive globalization.

I always ask myself what can I do for our great Chinese dream ? Here the word wealthy means: enriching our knowledge reserve.As a new generation of youth , every one here shouldering the great historical mission of making china powerful and strong.

You may say that this may exaggerate our role, but I want to say you are wrong. If I am a little screw our great dream may be a multifunction and complex machine. Through this example I just want to say I am very tiny but I am indispensable .

But now, I think, most of us become down-to-earth and the dream is more practical than before. However, have you taken actions to pursue your dream? Are you working hard enough to make your dream come true?

As for myself, I have dreamed to be an excellent police in high school due to there are so many thefts in my hometown while they are seldom caught. Sooner I have realized how ridiculous am I and now I turn to realistic: I just want to be a translator.

How do I pursue my dream?

First of all, I try my best to correct the pronunciation and read the textbook or other English magazines such as: English weekly, English salon and the like. I try to do this day by day. Now I have improved my reading ability a lot and it also enlarged my vocabulary.

Secondly, I often do some translating extension and embrace my teacher’s suggestion. It benefits me much.

Last but not the least, I realize my dream by reading Chinese literature. Maybe you will say it’s what the Chinese major students should do. If you say so, you are badly wrong. For as an English major student, how can you know others well if you even don’t familiar with your country? On the other hand, it also benefits me in translation and writing.

A dream is an inexhaustible source of energy that keeps our enthusiasm burning, and kindles our desire to enhance our spiritual cultivation, refine our character, and upgrade our quality of life. A life without a dream is like a bird with broken wings, confined to a cage and oblivious of what lies beyond the range of its vision. On the contrary, a man with a dream is like a warrior armed with ambition, foresight and gallantry, daring to step into an unknown domain to make a journey of adventure. It is dream that adds fullness, variety, and spice to our life and makes it worth living.

I would like to take Liu Xiang as an example.Liu,as the first chinese man to win an Olympic track and field medal,dreamed of defending his Olympic title on home soil.To achieve this dream,he was bathed with sweat on the training ground every day.What’s more,now and then he suffered injuries.However,neither the injury nor the pressure has prevented him from striving to achieve the goal.Eventually,he kept or even renewed his record in the men’s 110-meter hurdle with his perseverance.

It is true that barriers may sometimes stand in the way of your dreams,but remember success is hiding behind them.Instead of making dozens of excuses for your failure,just think about Liu Xiang’s story,hold on your dreams and never give up.

If you do not want your dreams to come to naught,then hold fast to your dreams and never give up.Just as the saying goes,”Do not,for one repulse,forgo the purpose that you resolved to effect.”

If you can do the following points,your dreams will come true one day.First,plant your dream in a fertilized soil.Second,water it with your diligence and give it the best food----knowledge.Third,remove the seeds of unhappiness for they can destory your dream.The most important is let the seed of your dream enjoy the beautiful sunshine,so what it can grow well.And however hard the situation is,o not give it up and always give it your best care.Then you will get a good harvest in the end.

Dreams are what we pursue for a lifetime,with many dreams,we have motivation to fight for our life.The opposite side of dream is reality.We have to face reality everyday,reality is what we perceive in our life.Reality always frustrates us to be successful.We need to balance them.
